Purpose
This training from SHE LEADS is designed to equip Digital Community Stewards (DCSs)—administrators and moderators of online spaces—with the skills and knowledge necessary to manage and nurture digital communities effectively. The curriculum aims to empower DCSs to foster safe, inclusive, and respectful environments while mitigating harmful behaviors, including technology-facilitated gender-based violence (TFGBV).
Target Audience
The training is tailored for individuals who oversee online communities across various platforms, including Facebook groups, WhatsApp groups, Telegram channels, and Reddit threads. Whether you are a seasoned moderator or new to community management, this curriculum is designed to enhance your leadership skills and improve community dynamics.
Curriculum Structure
The training consists of 8 modules, each focusing on different aspects of community management and digital leadership. Modules Include:
Module 1: Understanding TFGBV
This module covers the different forms of Gender-Based Violence (GBV), focusing on Technology-Facilitated GBV (TFGBV). Participants will learn about the characteristics and impacts of TFGBV, including its links to other types of discrimination and its potential to lead to offline violence.
Module 2: Digital Rights
This module highlights the importance of community standards for safe online spaces. Participants will learn about key digital rights and how they help manage online communities and address TFGBV, empowering them to advocate for member safety and community integrity.
Module 3: Boosting Member Engagement
This module focuses on enhancing member engagement in digital communities. Participants will discover effective strategies to boost participation, utilize platform data for decisions, and understand the importance of trust in building a healthy community.
Module 4: Building Safe Online Communities
This module provides tools to improve group security, such as privacy settings and post approvals. Participants will learn to create and enforce group rules that reflect community values, preparing them to maintain safe and respectful online environments.
Module 5: Combating False Information in Online Communities
This module explores misinformation, disinformation, and malinformation (MisDisMal). Participants will learn to identify different types, fact-check content, and report false information, helping to maintain the integrity of online communities.
Module 6: Digital Leadership
This module covers the key roles and traits of effective digital community stewards. Participants will learn strategies for community management and team building, while developing skills in empathy and self-care, enabling them to lead confidently and compassionately.
Module 7: Practicing Nonviolent Communication
This module defines hate speech and distinguishes it from free speech, discussing its effects on communities. Participants will learn to recognize and respond to online hate speech targeting women and girls, promoting nonviolent communication in their communities.
Module 8: Preventing and Responding to TFGBV
This module focuses on how to prevent and respond to TFGBV. Participants will learn to report incidents, access support, and document cases effectively. The module also emphasizes the role of various organizations and the importance of involving men and boys in prevention efforts.
