Based in Brussels and active in over a dozen countries, the European Institute of Peace (www.eip.org) is an independent organisation working collaboratively with the parties to the conflict, those who represent people suffering from insecurity or at risk of violence, as well as European decision-makers and the conflict prevention, resolution and mediation community.
We provide practical experience, technical expertise, and policy advice on conflict resolution. We use a variety of tools to help us do this, including analysis, mapping and design of peace processes and agreements, facilitating policy discussions, and proposing practical engagement, for example through inclusive dialogue and mediation support.

The Institute is looking for a Communications Officer (PPI) to support the Pathways for Reconciliation (PfR) in Yemen Platform in various tasks related to internal and external communications. The Platform is an independent national initiative represented by people from across Yemen working to articulate and represent the concerns, interests, and opinions of Yemenis on reconciliation and peace. Working through local coordinators from governorates across Yemen, the Pathways for Reconciliation Platform aims to engage and amplify the voices of Yemenis beyond the powerful elites, thus making the process of achieving settlement to the conflict inclusive, legitimate and sustainable. The Communications Officer will report directly to the Head of the Platform Steering Group in coordination with the Institute’s programme team and the Strategic Communications Advisor.
You will
- Assist the Head of the Platform Steering Group and Strategic Communications Advisor in the development and design of communication, outreach and advocacy strategies and campaigns, including for social media, to increase reach and impact of PfR content and brand.
- Manage the implementation of the approved social media strategy on platforms such as Twitter, WhatsApp, Telegram, YouTube, Facebook and other relevant platforms, including developing and tracking timelines for production and dissemination, and managing dependencies with other PfR members and projects.
- Manage approved digital campaigns, including advocacy and information campaigns, on issues of relevance to PfR-supported communities as well as for specific digital projects, products, and events. This includes developing and tracking timelines for production and dissemination and managing dependencies with other PfR members and projects.
- Contribute to the maintenance and development of PfR messaging on all (digital) assets.
- Coordinate production of content in Arabic and English, which can include: sourcing, writing, editing and posting features, updates and static content for the social media, website, press releases and opinion pieces, briefs and outlines for multimedia content, written and video interviews with PfR and external voices for event coverage, reports or other written content.
- Adapt existing content to social media-friendly formats and develop fresh content in response to key events and issues coming from various districts of Yemen.
- Monitor social media channels, responding to comments, inquiries, and messages in a timely and professional manner.
- Monitor social media analytics, track key performance metrics and identify areas for improvement.
- Assist in the management and growth of social media communities, including identifying and engaging with brand advocates to build a community of supporters among social media influencers in Yemen and related to Yemen, both Yemenis and international.
- Assist in ensuring all PfR coordinators and leading voices have substantive presence on social media and are integrated in the digital outreach strategy.
- Coordinate an emailing strategy to constituents in Arabic and English and work closely with PfR coordinators and leadership to plan and perform web and social media coverage of major PfR-related initiatives and events.
- Liaise with Platform Coordinators, outside partners to develop and complete these projects.
- Provide general administrative support to the communications team and assisting in the coordination and execution of internal and external events, such as conferences, workshops, and webinars.
- Related tasks as assigned by Line Manager.
Your skills and experience
- Excellent consulting, writing, editing (photo/video/text), presentation and communication skills in Arabic (including knowledge of the Yemeni Arabic to interact with project stakeholders) and English with the ability to adapt tone and style for different (social) media outputs.
- Good knowledge of Pathways for Reconciliation narrative and issues of concern to Yemenis from various districts, a strong commitment to human rights and specifically an interest in rights of Yemenis affected by conflict.
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience in communications, journalism, marketing, digital media, or a related field.
- Proven previous experience in a communications or marketing role and/or managing social media platforms and executing social media campaigns is desirable.
- A thorough understanding of different forms of content and their effectiveness with specific audiences, an good understanding of what would resonate well with the PfR audience is desirable.
- Experience with social media campaign development and implementation.
- Ability to translate complex issues into clear, simple ideas and engaging, innovative content, including text, photo and video
- Familiarity with popular social media platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, LinkedIn, YouTube.
- Proficiency in using various communication tools and platforms, including content management systems and social media management tools and analytics platforms to schedule posts, monitor performance, and analyse data.
- Strong visual communication skills with knowledge of basic graphic design principles and experience with video, audio and photo editing software is an asset.
- Knowledge of web design, web development, CRO and SEO are an asset. Knowledge of WordPress is desirable.
- Knowledge of MS Office and databases;
- Strong research and analytical skills as well as the ability to solve problems and exercise good judgment.
- Self-motivated with excellent time management skills and the ability to work independently as well as work collaboratively in a team environment and meet deadlines.
What we are offering
- The Institute is offering a consultancy service agreement starting August 1 (flexible). The initial contract will be for a period of 3 months, with the possibility of extension.
