Hi all! Looking forward to seeing introductions from our already nearly 200-member GAM community of practice. I’m Emily Long, Programs Officer at Search for Common Ground. I can’t wait to see all of the learning on being more accountable to the communities we work with.

As a starting point, I wanted to share the excellent questions that were asked & answered in our first meeting (recording is available here):

      • When deciding and narrowing down on indicators which are tailored to local communities, how does the process happen in reality?
      • What are the best concepts to lend themselves to GAM as a methodology of measurement?
      • How can indicators be put into M&E plans, or how else can they be incorporated?
      • Are focus groups always part of the method? Have any of the pilots used a different method? And a follow up, if it’s always focus groups, how do you ensure to capture diversity of voices?
      • What has been your experience in comparing results from similar interventions in different countries considering that each intervention is setting its own indicators?
      • When moving from bottom up to drawing up patterns in a broader form, how does that happen? Considering each community will have their own tailored indicators
      • How do we narrow down the indicators? What is the process?
      • What has been your experience in comparing results from similar interventions in different countries considering that each intervention is setting its own indicators?
      • How do we move from the bottom up to observe broader patterns with hyper-local indicators?
      • What is your long-term ambition for the GAM model – that its principles are broadly mainstreamed in most projects, that it becomes a tool amongst others?
      • For organizations that are not traditionally peace building, is there a way GAM can be incorporated in regular programming (for example in education/financial services) for either when an intervention is fomenting conflict and/or set up an early warning signaling system to see where conflict may potentially brewing that’s unrelated to the programming but local context?
      • Is there any designed peace indicator for schools taking into consideration Primary/secondary and Tertiary Institutions?
      • What is the largest geographic unit GAM has been applied to so far (in area / population)?
      • Has it been used in places where there are considered to be sharp divisions between communities e.g. displaced people and host communities?
      • How wide is the participation in the consultations that set the indicators? Is this restricted to “citizens”, “community members” or also including representatives of the state or even other parties to a conflict (e.g. non-state armed groups)?

Do you have any more questions for the GAM CoP? Feel free to share them below.
