The U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) initially conceived a conflict resolution training project in Sidi Yahia al-Gharb (SYG) which evolved into the building of a Community Resource Center in douar chanti, one of the poorest districts in SYG. The evaluation of this roughly two year project (lasting from December 2002 until September 2004) was flexible and qualitative, allowing for an in-depth understanding of the project and the evolution of the needs of the community throughout the course of the project. Some of the objectives of the evaluation included understanding the actors and stakeholders, understanding the changes in attitudes and behaviors of both beneficiaries and partners, and draw out useful lessons applicable to future similar projects. To do so, the evaluators carried out thirty semi-structure, qualitative interviews of a variety of actors, beneficiaries, partners, and stakeholders in the project. The evaluation highlighted the capacity building and conflict resolution workshops as an effective means to contribute to awareness of nonviolent means to conflict resolution.
